Many people are familiar with the HBO show but the novels are what started the journey. Martin’s novels are detailed, beautifully written, and much more detailed. While the novels do contain a lot of violence at times, it is a part of the story that Martin feels compelled to write.

Books to Read After A Song of Ice and Fire
The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie may be one series on the list that may eb able to match the violence of Martin’s novels. Whereas characters in A Game of Thrones are royalty, that isn’t usually the case in The First Law. It is a dark and gritty novel that doesn’t play into the hero tropes, instead following a bunch of characters that somehow are stuck together as disaster surrounds them.
One of my favorites on the list is The Mistborn Series by Brandon Sanderson. It has a magical system that is easy to follow and a lot of fun characters. Sanderson tells a story of a powerful villain that seems immortal. The hero has to muster a force to take down the cruel emperor that has been ruling for centuries.
A series that follows the prophecy theme of A Game of Thrones is The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. The world building is also complex and it doesn’t have too many characters like A Game of Thrones.
Few may know this but A Game of Thrones was influenced heavily by The Dragonbone Chair series by Tad Williams. That is reason alone to read the fantasy novel. The declining health of the king, siblings start plotting for the throne as old-secrets are revealed. Sounds familiar?
